Your Name (君の名は。), the greatest anime directed by Makoto Shinkai in 2016, has won recognition domestically and internationally. 2. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
In 2006, one of the Japanese animation leaders Mamoru Hosoda released his masterpiece titled The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (時をかける少女). The fantasy anime film was based on the novel written by the best-selling sci-fi Japanese author Yasutaka Tsutsui in 1967, but it tells the different story from the novel’s one.
The setting of the anime is 20 years after the world in the novel. There are three main characters who are high schoolers inThe Girl Who Leapt Through Time: Makoto, Kosuke and Chiaki. They live in the ordinary high school life, where there are generaladolescent interests such as love, study and career choice in this anime. However, Makoto notices she becomes able to transport herself to the past.

Looking back at 2023, it stands out as a year marked by the release of some big titles. The highlight was undoubtedly Studio Ghibli’s latest work The Boy and the Heron(君たちはどう生きるか) directed by Hayao Miyazaki. As another highlight Maboroshi (アリスとテレスのまぼろし工場), also known as Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Koujou, was released in September. One reason this work is drawing attention is due to the director, Mari Okada, who served as a screenwriter for series such as Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and Toradora!.
What might the year 2024 hold for the anime movie industry? The spotlight is on the latest work by director Tatsuyuki Nagai, titled Fureru (ふれる。), with a screenplay by Mari Okada, who directed Maboroshi, and Kimi no Iro (きみの色) by director Naoko Yamada, known for A Silent Voice.
In addition to these entirely new titles, many sequels to popular series will also be released. Awaited is Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie – Walpurgisnacht: Rising (劇場版 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ〈ワルプルギスの廻天〉), the next installment in the dark fantasy magical girl series.
As we head into 2024 and 2025, information about new releases is gradually increasing, and, there’s a feeling that many more high-quality movies are yet to emerge.
