From Hat-Trick Hero to Benchwarmer: Eberechi Eze's Arsenal Enigma
Remember that electrifying hat-trick against Tottenham back in November? Eberechi Eze seemed destined for stardom at Arsenal. Fast forward a few months, and the £67 million signing finds himself fighting for scraps of playing time. In the Gunners' last six league games, he's managed a mere 23 minutes on the pitch, spending four matches entirely on the sidelines. But here's where it gets controversial: is this a case of tactical necessity or a wasted talent?
Signed from Crystal Palace in August, Eze was billed as the creative spark Arsenal's attack craved. His free-flowing style and ability to unlock defenses promised to add a touch of flair to the forward line. Yet, his recent appearances have been fleeting, even in games where Arsenal desperately needed a breakthrough, like the goalless draws against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool.
Eze's stats this season – five goals and four assists in 26 games – are respectable, but his last goal came in that Tottenham hat-trick. Since then, he's been largely relegated to the bench, with only two starts this year, both in cup competitions. His 64-minute outing against Inter Milan in the Champions League, while contributing to the opener, lacked the brilliance we know he's capable of.
And this is the part most people miss: Eze's struggle for playing time isn't solely due to a lack of form. The return of Martin Odegaard, Arsenal's captain and a key playmaker, has limited Eze's opportunities in his preferred central attacking midfield role. Starting both would likely mean benching either Declan Rice or Martin Zubimendi, a tough call given their importance to the team's balance.
While Eze can operate from the left wing, a position he excelled in at Crystal Palace, Leandro Trossard's outstanding form has blocked that route. Mikel Arteta acknowledges Eze's versatility, stating, "He is that intelligent, and that good as a footballer, that he can occupy any space. I am more driven to decide where he plays in relation to the players around him than his position." But is this enough for a player of Eze's caliber?
His last start on the left wing, against Aston Villa, ended in disappointment, with Eze at fault for their opening goal. Arteta praises Eze's attitude during his time on the bench, noting his desire has only intensified. The manager also points out that Eze has played more football this season than at any previous stage in his Premier League career. However, this doesn't diminish the frustration of a player with his talent being underutilized.
Arsenal are enjoying a stellar season, topping the Premier League and progressing in both the Champions League and FA Cup. But the question remains: where does Eze fit into this success story? With the World Cup on the horizon, Eze needs regular playing time to convince Gareth Southgate of his worth. A rare start against Manchester United on Sunday could be his chance to prove why Arsenal invested so heavily in him.
