Story[]

Super Dish... A sweet, beautiful sound comes from those words. They bring to mind great cooking and great racks. The perfect combination.

Who strives to master the path to the Super Dish? Not nearly enough people, that's who.

This year, the Super Dish Gourmet Cook-Off will be held here at Hanzō Street Shopping District.

At first, I meant for this competition to be a show of skill for those who have mastered the Super Dish, but few were eager to take up that challenge.

So I've prepared a grand prize for the competition: a Secret Ninja Art Scroll with the power to grant one wish. Any wish.

Now, why would a scroll with the power to alter the fabric of the world be given away so easily?

Why, indeed? The truth lies hidden beneath a veil of dark and shocking conspiracies....[1]

Gameplay[]

Game modes[]

Bon Appétit! is divided into three main game modes (Story Mode, Arcade Mode, and Free Mode) and three levels of difficulty (Easy, Normal, and Hard). Story Mode is structured similarly to the Shinobi Girl's Heart missions in Shinovi Versus. Each of the ten playable characters (twenty-two with DLC) has an individual storyline that is explored over the course of five Cooking Battles, with cutscenes before and after the first, fourth, and fifth battles. The opponents for these battles are set depending on which character's story the player has selected, while the opponents for the second and third battles are random. Arcade Mode is an uninterrupted series of six battles against opponents determined by the chosen difficulty, and Free Mode allows players to battle with and against any characters of their choosing.

In addition to these, like Shinovi Versus, the game includes the Dressing Room, which allows players to customize each character's appearance and, after finishing a character's story, view her "special," and the Library, from which players can access a variety of score records as well as unlocked content (pictures, music, and voice sets). There is also a section called the Honor Roll that allows players to compare their scores to those of other players via an Internet connection.

Cooking Battles[]

Regardless of mode, each battle is one-on-one and involves the preparation of a three-course meal based on the opponent's favorite food (the dishes in a battle against Yomi all contain bean sprouts, for example), and the song that plays over the course of the battle is that character's theme. To complete a course, as characters cook in the background, players must press, hold, or mash the buttons corresponding to colored icons that scroll horizontally across the screen from right to left as they overlap a Ninja Star icon. Depending on the player's timing, this earns one of four ratings (Perfect, Great, Fine, or Bad), which contribute to a player's grade and overall score at the end of the battle. Perfect ratings fill up a gauge on the left side of the screen that, when full, allows players to use a Secret Ninja Art, which increases the amount of points earned over its duration (it continues until the player makes a mistake or misses an icon). During the first two rounds, performing well also fills up a heart-shaped meter (up to one half per round). If this meter is full by the third round, it will appear among the other icons and is activated by pressing any button when it overlaps with the Ninja Star. Once active, the background briefly switches from the characters cooking to close-up shots of the opponent's body intended to distract the player.

At the end of each round, Hanzō tastes both dishes and gives the player a score between 0 and 100 as well as a percentage score between -100% and 100% based on the length of his or her highest combo, which affects the size of the dish, and the overall quality of the dish (based on the types of ratings received). The character with the lower score for the round then loses at least one article of clothing. At the end of a battle, players receive a ranking from A to E based on the length of their highest combo, the number of each kind of rating they received, and their overall score. If the player wins all three rounds, then the opponent is stripped nude in Shinovi Versus fashion. This is considered a "perfect victory," and before the next battle, the player views that character's "special," which consists of the character posing nude (not counting accessories) on a plate of fruit, her body decorated with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.

Downloadable content[]

Bon Appétit! is compatible with all downloadable content from Shinovi Versus, including Rin and Daidōji, but it also has content of its own, specifically the Gessen x Hebijo Content Pack. As the name implies, this downloadable content adds the characters from Hebijo Clandestine Girls' Academy and Gessen Girls' Academy to the game, doubling the game's content. both in terms of the playable character roster and in terms of the number of songs available to play. Purchase of this pack is required to play as Rin, as she is classified as a Hebijo character and is not associated with Homura's Crimson Squad, and allows the player to download the Senran Kagura: Bon Appétit Stacked and Packed Soundtrack, 31 songs composed by Akihi Motoyama and Mutsumi Ishimura, at no additional charge.
